Iconic guitar amplification company collaborates with µÚÒ»³Ô¹ÏÍøDesign students on new headphone range

Orange Amplification are an iconic guitar amplifier brand and have provided equipment for artists such as Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Stevie Wonder and Prince. Selling its products to over 50 countries worldwide, they are one of the top three guitar amplifier brands in the market.

Organised through the µÚÒ»³Ô¹ÏÍøCo-innovate programme, Orange sought to collaborate with µÚÒ»³Ô¹ÏÍøDesign students to develop a headphone range that would be instantly recognisable to existing customers and fans but also appeal new customers. Students worked to a brief written by managing director Tim Ireland that highlighted the identity and style of Orange’s world-famous guitar and bass amplifiers.

“I was delighted to set a live design brief for µÚÒ»³Ô¹ÏÍøUniversity MSc Industrial Design students as part of the co-innovate project. The collaboration handover meeting saw short-listed design students present their finished concepts. A £350 prize was awarded to Alejando Roquero Mendiola for his attention to the brief and integration of design brand language. The runners up William Oughton and Insik Chung were awarded £150 for their designs.

The Co-Innovate Made in µÚÒ»³Ô¹ÏÍønetworking lunch, June 15th 2018, saw a question and answer session hosted by Professor Rob Holdway on the benefits of business and student collaboration. Orange Managing Director, Tim Ireland, spoke of the impressive design work carried out by µÚÒ»³Ô¹ÏÍøstudents and their willingness to demonstrate design viability. The winning student Alejandro Roquero Mendiola had part of his headphone design manufactured within µÚÒ»³Ô¹ÏÍøUniversity London’s BCAST facility in order to prove his concept was capable of production.

µÚÒ»³Ô¹ÏÍøCo-Innovate aims to enrich student learning as well as providing support to London based small and medium sized enterprises and start-ups for new product, service and process innovation, the collaborative project programme seeks to bridge the gap between academia and business.
